Closed Redemption is a state that a domain enters once it has expired and gone through the Deletion Phase.
The Closed Redemption Phase lasts a total of 20 consecutive days from the end of the Pending Deletion Phase, and is terminated if the domain is reinstated.During this phase there is a penalty to retrieve the domain this is imposed by the domian namme authority.
The cost varies on the tld (.com; co.za; .net; etc.) and can range from $20 to $200.
After you exceed the redemption period, you will not be able to redeem your domain and will need to purchase the domain name again (from any Registrar you choose) once the domain reaches general availability.
Domain can be registered by any party and is often snatched-up by domain resellers who charge a premium for the purchase of the domain.

The process is as follows all domains but periods may differ
1. The domain will expire
2. The domain will go through the Pending Suspension and Pending Deletion Phases
3. After the Pending Deletion phase is over, the domain enters the Closed Redemption Phase
4. In the Closed Redemption Phase a domain can be reinstated at the cost of the Closed Redemption Fee
5. If a domain is not reinstated in the Closed Redemption Phase, it will be deleted at the end of the phase

The life of a co.za domain is as follows:
1 to 5 days after the domain expires the domain goes into a Suspension Status.
5 to 10 days after the domain expires the domain goes into Deletion Status.
10 to 30 days after the domain expires the domain goes into Closed Redemption
30 days after the domain expires the domain stays in Expiry Deletion for 30 days.
After the above 30 days the domain is then available to the public to register the domain name.
